Hurricane Sandy Relief Opportunity

Yesterday, a Wal-Mart track traveled all the way from Las Vegas to St. John's University to donate materials for those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.  Many students and faculty members gathered together at Sullivan Café to help sort all of the donations, so that we can distribute everything to local communities.

We are currently still in the process of sorting through the many boxes and bags of donations.
If you would like to help out, feel free to come by Sullivan Café anytime today and tomorrow.
We would greatly appreciate it!

Have you had the chance to help out with any Hurricane Sandy Relief opportunities?
If so, please share your experience with us.

Help Those Effected by Hurricane Sandy

As we all know, many families and lives have been effected by the dangerous hurricane we were faced with at the beginning of the week. We hope that you and your family are safe!

There are many families and individuals without homes, power, clothing, food and water! The School of Education and Kappa Delta Pi would like to lend a helping hand to those in need and in order for us to do that, WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We are asking anyone in the St. John's Community to drop off:
o    Clothing
o    Water
o    Socks
o    Undergarments
o    Cups
o    Plastic cutlery
o    Non-perishable item
o    Toiletries
o    Baby wipes (any baby items including Diapers)
o    Blankets
o    Anything you think these families in need may need

All items can be dropped off in Sullivan Hall Room G-06. We would like to hand out donations over the weekend, so if you can get anything in to us today that would be even better. If not, anything you can bring in over the course of the week will be greatly appreciated!!

St. John's Open House

This weekend, St. John's hosted their first open house of the semester.  Prospective students came to tour the campus and receive information on the vast programs the university has to offer.

The School of Education hosted an Information Session in Sullivan Hall, in which Dean Ross, Dean Willis, Dean Haluska, and a variety of professors and students talked about the program and shared their experiences at St. John's.  The S.T.A.R. program was represented that day by your coordinators, Mike, Alice, and Rebecca, who sported the new S.T.A.R. Coordinators apparel.

Did you ever attend a St. John's Open House?  Did you go to the School of Education Information Session?  How was it?  What were your first thoughts about the school and program?

If you were were to give the high school students any advice about the application and decision process, what would it be?

City schools want hire authority

City Department of Education officials said they’re planning to seek state approval to certify teachers on their own for the first time, without the aid of colleges or universities.

Shael Polakow Suransky, the Department of Education chief academic officer stated “We don’t want to have to depend on a university in order to train our teachers.” State officials would have to OK the bid.

What does this mean for Students in the School of Education preparing to be a teacher?
The move would allow the city to grant teachers the initial certification needed to enter a public-school classroom for up to five years. Currently, prospective teachers have to earn college credits in teaching and education before getting hired.

What does this mean to you?

Upcoming Events

Looking For Something To Do?

In the next two weeks STAR and other School of Education Organizations have plenty of events going on all over campus for buddies and mentors to attend together.

Tomorrow night is the STAR Fundraiser Dining to Donate at Applebee's in Fresh Meadows.
Bring your friends, family, and everybody you know out to have dinner at Applebee's. When you present the Dining to Donate flyer, 10% of your bill will go towards the STAR Program.
Next week is Anti-Bullying Week.
For anybody who needs additional observation hours You Can Make It Better is going to IS 250 Robert F. Kennedy Middle School to do observations and work against bullying in schools.

The very next day a movie night will be held in the Pacini Room focusing on the highly relevant topic of  cyber bullying in schools. Sexting in Suburbia will be shown at 7pm for all those interested in attending.

During Anti-bullying week there will be a series of events going on throughout the entire week including STJ Storms out Bullying in the D'Angelo Center Monday the 22nd. Also, a speaking engagement with Lee Hirsch, the Director of the film Bully on Tuesday the 23rd in the Little Theater at 6pm

We strongly encourage all members of STAR to come out and show support for these events and learn about bullying in all forms and how to help prevent it in classrooms and in our own everyday lives.

Which event do you think you will go to?
Is there any kind of bully prevention event you would like to see happen?
How do you combat bullying?
